Cool peak
Hiked up with Brian and Ben Clate 8/12 via Fire Warden's Trail to Moose Falls camping area. Rigged my tent to the platform. Climbed Avery first thing 8/13 morning, spent some time in the foundation of an old lookout? Then on to West Peak quickly. Then solo on to tag both the Horns. While looking at the map up top on North Horn, I realized it was less mileage and elevation to head down to Horns Pond and return to camp via the Horns Pond Trail. Hiked out that night.

Excellent views
Up and down the Fire Warden's Trail from Stratton Pond. Tagged both Avery and West Peak and called it a day. Considering the drenching rain the day before the trail was surprisingly dry. The staircase just below the col was extremely well built. Two hours and fifty five minutes to the top of Avery from the TH and Two hours and twenty minutes back from the top of West Peak. Microspikes were helpful, but not necessary.

south horn via AT
Late start, climbed too slowly, turned around after tagging the south horn. Peaks were in the clouds anyway...
Lovely November day with snow flurries. Lots of mountain to explore here, I'm definitely coming back.
Up AT from rte 16, down Horn Pond trail to Firewarden's trail and out.
No hunters seen inside the preserve, but glad to be wearing orange on the approach.
Spotted two ruffed grouse in the morning, and one probable-moose-in-the-dark after sundown.

Fire Warden's to Horns Pond Day Hike
What a fantastic day of hiking. The weather was beautiful, the views gorgeous. Hit West Peak and both the Horns and regret not climbing to the top of Avery. It was already my longest day of hiking thus far, but so amazing. That leaves a fun addition for next time.

Did the loop
Hiked the "loop"...up firewardens (glad I do the stair master!!), over to Avery. So foggy and windy couldn't see the fire tower until right upon it!! View, What view :)
Then off to West peak via the AT...oh, so NOW it clears up! BEAUTIFUL views. Then to the two horns, to horn pond then back to the car via horn pond trail.
Wonderful traverse...highly recommended.

Bigelow Mountain
Climbed via the Fire Warden's Trail from Stratton Pond. Another terrific dayhike on the Appalachian Trail. Went up to the Horns, West Peak and Avery Peak, the last of which was likely the best in the whole range. Had some exceptional views of Flagstaff Lake and the surrounding mountains for most of the way.
I actually helped build some sections of the massive staircase on the Fire wardens trail. I lived in the caretakers cabin on the col for 2 weeks, summited a handful of times.

A great spot
I've hiked up the Bigelow Peaks many a time. The first time was during my 2000 AT thru-hike. The following year I was lucky enough to be a caretaker with the Maine Appalachian Trail CLub at the Horn's Pond campsite.

Icy night
Saturday was a beautiful climb with full foliage around the lake below. We camped Saturday night in Bigelow Col. By Sunday morning everything was covered with ice. Had an interesting time scampering down the mountain without any winter climbing gear.
