Hiked up the east ridge then skied down the Hopeful Couloir, solo. The trail was mostly dry as was the ridge. Short snow patches easily navigated except one steeper one near the top of ridge which required a little care. Dropped in at 9.30 and the snow was great! A an old wet slide took out a good portion of the apron ski, however. Reclimb to the pass went quick.

nice day
nice hike up Sheep Gulch and east ridge with my buddy Scott. The trail is steep of course but in great shape (fairly heavily trafficked as it is part of the Colorado Trail and Continental divide trail; and also likely people getting ready for the Leadville 100). The summit and view is above average for the Sawatch. Going much earlier in the year up the east ridge would likely lead to a steep snowfield to negotiate but for the rest of this year, there is no need for an ice axe

Sheep Gulch
Snowshoe suffer-fest in a whiteout. This is a good peak to do on a bad weather day, since it's hard to get lost or turned around. Still, it would have been nice to have a bit more of a view.

Standard route
From Sheep Gulch TH. Pleasantly surprised there were still quite a few perfect, dew covered columbine just below treeline in the boulders, and got some great pics. Beautiful views from the summit. When I got back down to Hope Pass, was greeted by a bunch of colored flags...but not for me. They were put up by the Leadville 100 volunteers for the weekend race. Great day in the Sawatch Range!

East Ridge from Sheep Gulch
I was flattened by the flu earlier in the week and needed a relatively easy outing - Mt Hope fit the bill perfectly! The snowpitch below the summit is still there - though probably not for long - and required an ax. The snow was deep and suncupped. Views from the top of this peak are simply amazing. Storm clouds suggested we skip Quail and just hike that one with the dogs next time. Climbed up with a juvenile male goat following us and taking quite an interest in us. Drinks and dinner at Eddy Line afterwards. With Mike.

Couloir via Willis
Ascended the couloir via Willis. The snow was in good shape even though the couloir is receding from the bottom. We climbed up 1/4 way up when thunder snow came in. After hunkering down the skies cleared for a brief period and we were able to summit. We descended via the north ridge on game trails back to Willis.

Ouch. Fracture!
Up from the Willis Gulch TH, via the NE ridge, with Megan and Katie, both 13. A nice day. En route down, though, Katie fractured her ankle. Fortunately we were already on the trail. She didn't really know what happened; she didn't even fall over, but just caught her foot wrong some way. So much for the high end ankle-protecting hiking boots I'd bought her in Denver a couple of days earlier... I didn't know at the time that the bone was damaged, but it was absolutely clear that she wouldn't be able to walk off the mountain. Fortunately, we were only ~ 2 mi from the TH -- all downhill -- and on a major trail, so it wasn't too hard to carry her out (95lbs). Definitely fortunate that this didn't happen higher on the hill. I assumed soft tissue damage, but we went anyway to the ER at Aspen Hosp to check out the injury: fracture. Ouch.

Nice hike and final scramble via the east ridge to summit Hope on a pleasant sunny day. Had the summit all to myself, with great views to the south and west. I took the SE ridge on the descent. This was peak #7 on my 13 day trip.

Mt. Hope
Hiked from Sheep Gulch. Great peak. 4,073 feet elevation gain over 3.39 miles. Not long on the summit saw lightning to the north. Started heading down from the summit.
Climbed via the hopeful couloir. Great day, great snow conditions. We descended via the SE ridge route, my only regret of the day. The route will entice you from the top with her grassy slopes, but under her skirt its a steep and rotten ride. Have not done the East ridge, but I would guess it has to be the better option :)
