Out here in the field...!!!

"Sally, take my hand, We'll travel south cross land. Put out the fire, And don't look past my shoulder. The exodus is here, The happy ones are near. Let's get together, Before we get much older." (Roger Daltrey & The Who - 1971) For Arizona, 2008 was (is) a great year for sunflowers. On the west side of central AZ's Black Hills, it might as well be called "GOLDEN HILLS" for all I know. Does anybody remember that classic song, "China Cat Sunflower" by Grateful Dead??? Geez, don't tell me I'm the only person who remembers that song, I think it was from their third album. (Is it cold in here, or is it just me?) The state flower of Kansas, members of the sunflower family are popular with BUTTERFLIES because the wide flower head makes a good "landing platform" and the numerous individual flowers make for a high probability of finding nectar. Monarch butterflies are commonly seen "nectaring" on sunflowers during their fall migration. And, I suppose there are some of you (on SUMMITPOST) who would LOVE to see butterflies migrate to some faraway and out-of-reach place, miles away from the windswept and scree-covered slopes of classic mountain faces. I'm NOT one of those people. September 5, 2008
