"What do you think, Jan?"

This ramp is right next to the saddle between Tindaborg and Hvannadalshnúkur, viewed from the west. When I first saw this, from a bit further away, I thought that it would make a suitable route to Hvannadalshnúkur, shorter than the route we were planning. However, Jan had serious doubts about it. As we got closer it looked steeper than it first did. I was on snow shoes, Jan on on skis, and for this we obviously would have to switch to crampons. We had the gear we would need and talked about our options, but in the end we decided against it and stuck to our original plan. That meant going around all the icy towers on the left, and look for a good place to turn right further on. We got fairly close to the towers and had to negotiate a few crevasses, including some pretty big ones, but always found a way to continue. It was never too steep for my snow shoes, though at one point the hard icy surface didn't provide enough purchase for skis, so Jan had to take them off. 18 May 2017.
