IntroThe flatirons are a series of awesome sandstone rock formations on the west side of Boulder, visible from just about anywhere in the city. There are numerous routes, ranging from hikes to class 4 scrambling to 5.14.
The 2nd flatiron is typically ranked at about 5.2, with much of the route being even easier scrambling. There are also numerous spots to scurry off to walkable terrain if you get spooked, so it's a great place for people to practice free-soloing. Making it even more ideal, it's approachable from a trail, and there's a trail down the backside after you summit! What a perfect equation for a quick climb. I'm not a huge soloer, but I can do this one comfortably, so we do it occasionally on lunch break at work (one of the advantages of working at NOAA in Boulder!)
Here is a shot of me in front of the flatirons
AscentIt's about 700 feet. We solo this route in about 30 minutes usually. Not too much more to say, so here are the pics!
