A Great Shot

Your camera sure made a difference. My photo was taken at the exact same time and it doesn't look like this!

A nice camera certainly makes a difference, but it also has to do with technique. If you want I can show you a few camera tricks on the next trip we go on.

Thanks, Photo of the Day in my opinion is not a very accurate reflection of the best work of summitpost. Sometimes it works, and other times not. This is why I am not in favor for automatic selections. In a sense this was a test image for the Photo of the Day to see what would happen, I figured it would not make it because Photo of the Day now days has become more of a popularity contest. So as a result I figure I should not worry about it. Anyways it was an incredible moment in the mountains.

Ya to get photo of the day you must give up your first born. To get photo of the week you must sell your soul to the devil. I gave up on POTD/POTW a long time ago. What really matters is sharing your shots on summit post....and to that I say mission accomplished. Happy Trails and I look forward to more excellent trip reports in the near future.

Not a damn shame...

The reason this photo didn't get POTD has nothing to do with the popularity contest (which does exist though), but rather because someone else submitted a high quality mountain page yesterday and a photo attached to it received more votes. A photo showing a mountain on a new page is more of an asset than one showing scenery.

I disagree with TyeDyeTwins, what really matter is not submitting photos, but sharing beta on places to go in the mountains, similar to the trip report you submitted.

But it is a nice photo.

And yes... it is better not to worry about it. Getting POTD won't affect your life very much one way or the other.

Good point Mr. Chad, but I was pointing out a true fact of sp. Dean certainly posted a great page. As for the votes, I counted the votes an hour after it got photo of the day which was not based on numbers (both photos had 10 votes) but has more to do with people's power and vote weight. My opinion is both beta and great photography is important to this site, I originally joined summitpost as a photographer which people enjoyed the photos I took. In a pinch it encouraged me to explore new places hence inspired me to take beta photography. After all in my opinion it's good photography that helps inspire people to go to certain places.

I definitely agree with all of that Josh. Great photos on a page are an excellent asset, anything that helps inspire and encourage people to go out and do more.

We all have our opinions mrchad9 (and I certainly respect yours)....but come on.....look at the pic of the day posted by Dean that day and you will see what I mean....THIS ONE WAS WAY MORE DESERVING OF THE FRONT PAGE! Just because a new page has good beta is no reason for a pic of the day. I thought all the great new mountains of the week can be found on the right side of the front page. Me....I am a photographer who appreciates the great art of the mountians, and the beta comes last to me on this website.

And on a final note there is a popularity contest going on here. How many photos of the day does Dean, Marc and Afzal have? Don't get me wrong...they all have several, if not hundreds of KICK ASS, BEAUTIFUL, WELL DESERVING PICTURES. But after seeing the same people on the front page year after year...any chances of POTD/POTW have been surely lost for those who actually deserve it.

I LOVE SP for the following reasons (which are gonna differ from you mrchad9)...
1. Pictures
2. Trip Reports
3. Freedom of speech (that does not exist on most websites)
4. The Threads
5. The great people
6. Articles
7. Beta

The last thing I would like to do is cause drama on this site, but I will defend my statement of "A Damn Shame".

Actually this my surprise you TyeDyeTwins, but I agree 100% with your sentiments here. I was more intending to disagree with Josh's characterization of why his photo didn't make it this particular time, and perhaps did so too strongly. With repect to it being a damn shame, I would also agree that the current process is a damn shame, just wouldn't have jumped to the level of saying that applied for a particular day's selection, but that's just being nitpicky on my part.

Obviously this particular photo judged solely against the other photo is better, and like you, as I said, I am very much against the current selection process, but there is little we can do about it other than keep asking for change.

Please see my posts HERE, even if just my first post, and you will see where I stand. I perhaps didn't communicate fully before.

And HERE I brought the issue back up to Matt. He seemed slightly responsive, but so far nothing has happened yet.

Many of our reasons for loving SP are the same, just the order is different (though I am not sure if you were intending those to be in order).

Happy trails to you as well, and btw I have always been impressed with many of your pictures.

Part of my point was good scenery does not always win. Sometimes flowers, frogs, or what ever win the Photo of the Day rather than some amazing clearing on some peak in the middle of the Himalaya that deserved photo of the week. But the most important thing we can do is not to take it seriously because the Photo of the Day will probably not change any time soon. I'll admit Mr. Chad, the thread on vote weight was indeed interesting and agreeable.
