A "historic photo" of Popocatepetl taken in December 1992 from Tlamacas. Everything, except the outline of the mountain is gone today. There are no trees left. There are no glaciers left and hut is long gone. Here is a more recent photo. (Also gone is my buff appearence as the photo was taken before I got fat and was in pretty good shape.)

Hasn't voted | One certain thing about Popo. It is in a constant state of flux. I remember visiting the Tlamacas lodge in January, 1990 and marveled how comfortable and popular climbing the mountain had become since I first climbed it in the early 1950s. Now it has return to its primal state without lodge and without glacier and very dangerous to climb at all. Interestingly, I remember reading a report from 1992, that said something to the effect that the mountain is still considered active, but that is was very unlikely to erupt anytime soon. They sure blew that one. | | Posted May 11, 2006 4:53 pm |

Hasn't voted | I never got to the top. I was there with my Dad around Christmas of 1975. Was that lodge the place where they never could get the fire going very well because of the altitude?
