This sport defines gear intensive

Actually,I've seen people go in with way more. My cabinmate "Schreck" at Scapa had so much stuff on, took him 50 minutes to get everything on.

Yeah

I've done deeper ocean dives with as many as three decompression tanks (in addition to the two big ones on my back and an argon bottle) but it's pretty hard to swim with more than that. I've done Florida cave dives with even more tanks but then I was using a scooter to get around.

Re: Yeah

Just wondering, what is the argon bottle for? I take it you're not breathing the stuff? Used to do a bit of diving and don't remember hearing about them plus can't find much searching online. Cheers.

Re: Yeah

Argon is used for suit inflation on trimix dives. It's denser and has lower thermal conductivity than air, and much lower conductivity than helium. If your backgas has a significant fraction of helium (on this dive I think I was using 45% He) then you don't want to fill your drysuit with that, so you carry a small suit inflation tank. You could use air in that, but argon is a better insulator so most trimix divers use it.
