A view of Chicken Out Ridge...
A view of Chicken Out Ridge from the Borah Peak Trail on June 19, 2002. The traverse across this ridge is probably the hardest part of the whole climb. When I was there, I would rate it as having been class 3 but I could see how other conditions could make it harder. The snow saddle was hard snow for me (in late morning) and was less problematic due to the nice bootpath along it. That horizontal line of snow extending left from the snow saddle is a trail. As it looked pretty exposed and icy, I decided to simply stay on the ridge crest (maybe one class 4 move getting up from the saddle).
