left early and climbed straight up the ski lift to the Agassiz summit. Early 2005 had LOTS of snow (maybe 300% normal), so this felt like a true winter hike.
Traversed over to Humphreys and descended straight down the skiers right side of the snowbowl.

Sounds like we did the same route. It sucks in summer, I don't think early winter would have been any better.

I hiked the long slog up the rough south ridge from Freidlein Prairie Road. It really isn't worth it, and because of the low tree branches, the scree and talus, and the eroding and soft grassy slopes it is a huge pain. There was also a lot of snow up there still, which surprised me as it is not visible from town. My hike could have ended a lot worse than it did, as I dislodged some loose rocks and fell back about 10 feet. No broken bones, but lot of cuts and soft spots on my ribs. This low caliber peak isn't worth any injuries. I recommend just taking the old trail from the saddle and using the North Ridge Route to poach this in summer, though winter is actually more fun and the views better with the clear air.

After doing Humphreys the day before, we camped above the saddle towards Agassiz. Amazing sunset and sunrise! We then did Agassiz early that morning and then went down one of the chutes into Snowbowl where we just followed the runs to the parking lot.

I decided to take a new approach on this one. I parked on a forest service road about one mile south of the base of Agassiz. I went directly 4000 feet up a steep ridgeline. The last 1000 feet I experienced 50-70 mph winds, 100 mph gusts, negative 11 degree F windchills, and an air temperature of 18 degrees F. This was a difficult route. There was 6 - 12 inches of snow and bare rock.

After summitting Humphrey's Peak, I walked over to Agassiz Peak, where I bumped into a sign saying the peak 'is closed to hiking 500 dollars fine'. Although I was the last one on the mountain ... I didn't ... maybe another time when it is snowcovered.

Climbed this along with Doyle and Fremont Peak. Was trying to get all seven peaks but was forced off of Agassiz by close lightening strikes. Saw a tree get struck and catch fire on adjacent ridgeline.

I managed to get on Agassiz 3 times this winter. All of them good. I like coming over from Humphrey on the ridge, its a fun traverse in snow shoes.

Figured I could afford 500 bucks. Thats about the same as the government rebate anyway, so I would just give back the money they were returning to me. Report map and pictures at http://www.willhiteweb.com/state_highpoint/arizona/mount_humphreys_184.htm

Ground uphill through the snow, then donned crampons above timberline and cruised on the ice and snow up to the beautiful summit of Agassiz. A rare wind-less day and temps in the high 20s on top made the summit a treat. Hiked down on the south side of the Snowbowl area, inside the wilderness. You have to get the permit to do this, but the office doesn't open until 9:00, so don't expect an early start.

Skipped this peak in the summer b/c of the regulations so was glad to do it finally (and legally)

Night Climb. Great sunset. Took my lawn mower and got rid of senecio franciscanus. Now it is legal to climb Agassiz. I followed the trail most of the time since it was dark.

I hiked up this one after hiking up Humphreys on my way back to the top of the ski lift. I had forgotten about it until today when I was looking at some old slides of when I hiked up Humphreys... sure enough, there was a picture I took from the top of Agassiz looking back at Humphreys. I had written on the slide frame, "Me on top of Agassiz." I don't know if the "off-limits" rules were in place then. If they were, I'm hoping the statues of limitations have passed. :)

I was successful on this mountain although I didn't actually stand on the summit. I was told that this mountain is closed for climbing year round due to the endangered vegetation. So, I decided to walk around the mountain and considered that my summit. It's just a walk-up anyhow, so what's it matter. It's better to save the plant life than it is to walk on the endangered plants just so one can say that he summitted the mountain. Hopefully the author/maintainer of this page will change his suggestions to climb the peak illegally.
