Orchids

I might have said it somewhere before: I inherited the fascination for orchids from my late dad who was a professor for biology. Someday, when I was already about fifteen, he took me on an excursion to a meadow near his university. It was a real small meadow but we found half a dozen species up there. I was hunting high and low for new ones when I came across my first viper, one of these:

It wouldn't stop me of course.

Later, on Monte Albo on Sardinia I found the perfect spot my dad would have loved. A high plateau covered with meadows on which every other step another kind of orchid would blossom. Somehow I feel I need to dedicate this album to him, wherever he is now.

I like Orchids...

I have a couple south american varieties in my bathroom. I only know of two species native to Colorado, Bog Orchids, and Calypso Slippers (you aren't going to make me look them up to give you the latin names are you :) Your photos are fantastic. I would love to hike someplace with so many native specimens.

I once remember reading an article on black market orchids being smuggled out of Malaysia. It was some british expert stating "it is a fine line between the casual collector and complete horticultural insanity..." I love that qoute.

Great

Great to see a page dedicated to orchids, a family which includes some of my personal favorite flowers. Maybe there could be some more information on things such as the diversity of orchids (number of species, specializations, etc) and biology/ecology (like the special mutualist relationships that some species have with soil fungi).

Latin Names

Jon, if we can trust my pocket field guide, they are Platanthera dilatata and Calypso bulbosa.

P.S. How come Raymond and Sopris are still missing from the canine friends album?

Thank you for setting up this page. It is incredible and a pleasure to look at. :-) I would love to see a moth orchid in the wild - it must be incredible to stumble upon them. I have a few here at the house. We even have a *wild* one growing, in all places, of our basement window well. It seems to like it there, since it comes back year after year.
