South Peak, KatahdinMost people get their first view of Katahdin from the south-southeast, and from that angle South Peak appears to be the tallest, even though Baxter Peak is in reality a few feet taller.
There are no direct trails up South Peak, which is located just south of Baxter Peak at the western end of the Knife Edge. Take your choice of trail to Baxter Peak and then wander a short way to South Peak, or climb Pamola Peak and then cross the Knife Edge.
