Fluting is generally formed as melting water forms channels in snow and ice. This is especially common in the high subtropical ranges of the Andes and Himalaya where the snow and ice linger, but the sun is warm. Flutings can also be formed as falling ice and avalanches create similar channels in the snow.
This adds a rugged texture to an already extremely rugged landscape.
