Krummholz

Krummholz is German for "twisted wood" and is a growth form exhibited by trees at locations of great environmental stress, such as high elevations and high wind. At lower elevations, where more favorable conditions exist, the same species that form into krummholz grow upright. But up high they are smaller, twisted, and bent over. I love finding these gnarly old trees when hiking in high elevations. Please add your own photos here!

I was going to do the same thing, but was waiting until I had a few decent shots to contribute. Living krummholz doesn't photograph all that well - I predict we'll see more photos of dead ones.

"I am in love with this world. I have nestled lovingly in it. I have climbed its mountains, roamed its forests, sailed its waters, crossed its deserts, felt the sting of its frosts, the oppression of its heats, the drench of its rains, the fury of its winds, and always have beauty and joy waited upon my goings and comings."   --John Burroughs
