The Northern Sierra in WinterWhile many ways will get you about in the snowy Northern Sierra, my preference was on cross-country skis. Silently they will glide over the new snow, with only a huff or a puff from you as you surmount any slight uphill on your way to a destination.
This now mainly forgone sport offered an inexpensive and easy way to enjoy the winter backcountry, with many enthusiasts eager to promote and share the efforts.
Maybe now also forgone are the colder temperatures that were the norm in the area. While most could hardly tell, I fear the warmer present temperatures may indicate that global warming is now a reality. Yes, as I motored up the Interstate in my even fairly fuel efficient car, then, I was contributing to the demise of the cooler climate. Whether we ever see such sights, again, of the drier powdery snow, and the heavier snowpack, is left to the guesses of the futurists.
