Joining Up with the Ski Mountaineers

1980 was another banner peak year for me. I did a good number of ski tours, and applied to join the Angeles Chapter Ski Mountaineers. I had some peak leads already for the local chapter, and when they allowed me along, I rushed at the chance. They are very expert skiers, with a long history of ski exploration.

It turned out that many of them were about my own level, and they basically evolved from heavy alpine gear, as they have in Europe, to three pin bindings, what I have.

Our snow camp in the White Mountain excited me, as it was a good chance to make use of my heavy duty snow camping clothing. I became more bold, this season, in doing many other snow camping trips, one of which was Glacier Point. I consider this the primo snow camp in the Sierra, and all fairly easily accessible.

Equipment was much cheaper, then, and I feel sorry for any that should try to take up this sport, now. You will get the feel for how cold it gets at night, and while you simply retreat to your tent and winter sleeping bag, try to imagine others without such gear. You will always go prepared, from then on!

"We have nothing against the practice slopes and the standard runs, but if that's all you know, you've missed something special; something lost beyond the ranges, a glistening new white world with its hard edges covered over for the winter, and you its discoverer."   --Dave Brower
