A sort of challenge

Before a recent business trip to Gardiner MT, I searched SP for Yellowstone peaks that I could climb after work in 3-3.5 hours. I didn't expect there to be many (and there aren't).

My big surprise was that there weren't many Yellowstone peaks on SP, period. The YNP page lists only eleven peaks in the park--and two are easy little peaks that I just added. Compare that with the list for Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Yosemite, Grand Teton, or other "crown jewel" parks.

So, I said to myself, "Self! If you don't have time to climb them this time, at least take some pictures from the bottom of the mountains for future reference." This album collects those pictures.

If you have similar pictures, please attach them.

More important: if you've climbed any of these, create a page for the mountain on SP. I'd love to delete pictures from this list as the mountain pages get created.

I'd suggest turning this into a list, though. I would guess that there are so few Yellowstone peak pages on SP because the approaches are long, the rock is too sketchy (especially on the east side) for much technical climbing, few trails approach the big peaks, and the permit system deters a lot of climbers.

I would love to do Abiathar, but it's Class 4, rotten, and way off the trails-- bad idea to do solo. But maybe I'll give in when I'm out there next summer.

	Hasn't voted	Thanks, hope it ends up useful. I tried it as a list, but really all that does is make the thumbnails smaller and take the captions away. Keeping it as an album lets people see the mountain names too. I suspect your explanations for the lack of peaks is mostly right -- but what about Sepulcher, which is only 11 miles roundtrip and a walkup? I think Yellowstone also "suffers" from being far from any big cities, so it doesn't have the weekend crowd writing up pages as in Colorado.

Whatever the reason, there are too few pages for Yellowstone peaks on SP. There are plenty of other remote, hard to get to peaks on here. I hope more pages are added...

I've done Sepulcher, Cutoff, and Antler which you have photos of here. I have also climbed quite a few others such as Eagle (highest in the park) and The Thunderer. I guess I should stop being lazy and put up some pages. I'll try and do that over the winter. Bob, I would be up for a go at Abiathar. Just something to keep in mind next time your out this way.
