Word or two about the range...

Ascend through the mist

Play of the sun and wind
Kamnik Alps belong together with
Karavanke/Karawanken and Julian Alps to the Southern Limestone Alps.

This is the last stage of the Alps where mountains again rach the "Alpine" heights of 2000m and above,
before gradually descending toward the edge of the Pannonian basin.

Name of the range is derived from the terms used by scientists - geographs mostly, inside last 200 years.
First named Steiner Alps after German name for town
Kamnik (Stein) at the southern foot of the range,
in 1877. the name Sanntaler Alpen (Slovenian Savinjske Alpe) was introduced by
Austrian scientist Johannes Frischauf, to be repeated shortly afterwards by
the Slovenian scientist Fran Kocbek.
Today, both names are equally used.
The central part of the range has, however, preserved
the popular name Grintovci, after the highest summit of the entire range,
namely Grintovec.

Kamnik Alps are formed of 3 main groups:

Storzic group between rivers of Trziska Bistrica and Kokra
Central range with Grintovci, between rivers Kokra and Savinja
and Raduha group east of the Savinja river.

All groups are well presented here at SP, this album is
small choice of photos covering most of the range
by number of photographers who contributed their work here.
