This album will take you on a brisk trek along the highest ranges of the Carpathian Arc.

Pinus cembra at timberline

There are plenty of pix of both high and low Carpathian ranges and massifs on the Parent Page and its numerous child pages (SP Tatra galleries are virtually impenetrable). Some of those mountains are just a few dozen meters too low to qualify here, where - most of the time - you'll find just one 'summerish' and one 'winterish' photo of the highest ranges rising above timberline. Images that show a broader scene, prominent peaks and geologic bricks will be preferred, which means that plenty of wonderful pictures will not be included, e.g.: beautiful flowers and butterflies (which I generally love), not even any truly Carpathian butterflies; bizarre rock formations; the stunning red alpine wintry creatures or fiery sunsets.

If your favourite season is winter, you'll find the winter collection down below the long 'summerish' thru-trek.

Călimani (Romanian)/Kelemen (Hungarian) Mountains. In the centre, the Twelve Apostles of andesite - three clicks and you'll see them very well. Taken by Ottricha

Anyway,

We start at the NW end.

when I started my Carpathian adventure (take away my regular childhood vacations at the foot of the Tatra Mountains), at nearly 18 years of age, I headed for Babia Góra (Witch Mtn), the highest peak of the Żywiec Beskid because:

1 I thought I needed some training before scrambling in the Tatras

2 Beskid Żywiecki was the nearest Carpathian range rising above the timberline.

I believe most SP'ers will find both of the above reasons reasonable and hope you enjoy this guided virtual trek along the most elevated sections of the great Carpathian Arc - from its NW to the SW end.

I hope so:) And it goes well with Peterbud's area page, although - or rather because - we're going to feature different pix. I find it a good:) example of C/EEu cooperation working well without any money from Brussels.

They're all a bit too low but hopefully will all be included in Péter's gallery/area page. But you're right - there are quite a few ranges still missing from this page: Gorgany, Rarau-Giumalau, Harghita, Postavarul, Capatini, Godeanu...
