Day two of our four day trip
After spending a night in the campground, we headed for Capitol Wash and the Golden Throne trail in the morning. I had my eye on a peak since I first saw it on the topographic map last year in 2008. It'd be true that most people don't even know about George BM but interestingly enough, two friends had done it a bit earlier in the year. One of them provided me with a map of their cross country effort and that was extremely helpful. This peak is known on the topographic map as George BM (benchmark)which is 7289' feet high and is higher than the Golden Throne and everything else in the area. Coming in with 1309' feet of prominence making it the 196th on the prominence peak list of Utah. Here is more info from List of John's great website: George BM.It was close to a 4.5 mile hike with the first two miles of it on a trail that leads up to a viewspot for the Golden Throne which gains 1100 feet in those two miles. Then you follow a use trail, some cairns and cross country it the rest of the way. Some routefinding is needed to find the key spot which allows you via a 40 foot class three scramble to gain an area that leads up to the summit. The scramble is easy but does have exposure at one place where you'd not want to take a fall so pay attention on the way up so you know the right way down. Not a normal hike but if you want isolation, this is it. A benchmark and two witness markers adorn the top area. Overall 9.0 miles round trip and close to 2000 feet elevation gain.
After we did this hike and climb, we drove to Calf Creek campground off of highway 12 on the east side of Escalante and got one of the last two campsites that were still available.
