two fine wild valleysThe Valgerola is the westernmost among the valleys that, from Valtellina, enter the Orobie Alps.
A good, somewhere narrow, road starting from Cosio (Morbegno) leads to the main inhabited centre, Gerola Alta, wherefrom 3 main valleys go on toward the Orobie ridge, from West :
- the Val Vedrano, ending at the Alpe Vedrano and surrounded by "sweet" grassy summits
- the Valle di Pietra, ending with some lakes and surrounded by sharp and rocky summits
- the Pescegallo, ending with two basins, the W one is a small but good (and cold) ski-area, the E one hosts a lake.
Between the rocky ridge of Rocca di Pescegallo (E side) and the one coming down from Pizzo dei 3 Signori and Pizzo Varrone (W side) there are 2 valleys divided by a rocky spur whose high point is the Pizzo di Tronella (aka Torrione di Tronella) :
- the Western one, the main, ending with 4 lakes to the S, bordered by the main ridge : the Valle della Pietra
- the Eastern one, minor, closed to the S by a strange wild rock ridge named "Cresta della Mezzaluna" (Halfmoon ridge) and named Val Tronella
From Gerola Alta the 2 valleys : Tronella (left) and Pietra (right) | Images
