The short version

Despite an awful forecast (overcast, 50% chance of snow) Steve and I decided to try for La Plata, expecting a fairly brutal time in the weather. We made good time on the well-packed snowshoe superhighway to treeline, where we gained the northwest ridge. The overcast cleared out and by summit we were in the sunshine with no wind. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day, and the spotty weather system made for some incredible views on the peak.

A great album!

Must have been mighty cold but awesome all the same! The photos in any case tell me that this was a spectacular tour!
Many cheers,
Eric

Re: A great album!

Thanks Eric. Actually it wasn't very cold except for when we stopped moving on the summit. The weather made for a unique perspective on the Sawatch range.

Looks Nice in Winter

I climbed La Plata last August on a very cloudy day
(but no rain) - we couldn't see past our noses, so it's nice to see some other pics. Winter sure makes the Sawatch look beautiful.

Re: Looks Nice in Winter

Yes, this was an incredible winter climb, and we lucked out with the weather! It was totally calm nearly the whole time. Intermittent wind on the ridge and summit reminded us of how spoiled we were.
