Route: FR379 variation  Sucess!

I ran up and down Almagre Mtn. from just above Gold Camp Road on FR379 (10,130 ft.). Started at 4:32 am MST, just before sunrise. Mild temperatures and light wind all the way. The trail shortcut saves a lot of distance. Two hours up, an hour and thirty-seven minutes down, with just over an hour to explore the ridge between Almagre and “Baldy” (12,349 ft.), where the communications towers are located. Stratton Reservoir is nearly empty! Nice views. Didn’t see anyone until I was nearly back to Frosty Park. 12.3 miles, ~2,400 ft. vertical, total time 4:45.

Route Climbed: Gould Creek & FR-379A Date Climbed: January 2, 2006  Sucess!

After seeing how bare it was was from Rosa a few days earlier, a quick return to hike up Almagre was in order. As the page's author suggests, there are seemingly an unlimited number of ways to climb this peak. My group hiked up the Gould Creek road to Deer Park and then we used FR-379A to get to the reservoir. A keen metal shelter was a nice respite from the steady 40 mph winds (with gusts above 50 mph) and a great place to gear up. We hiked to both the north summit and the south summit, which hosts the communications towers (both are ranked 12ers). As we were making our way toward the north peak, we bumped into 'shknbke'.

Route Climbed: FR 379 variation Date Climbed: Jan 2, 2006  Sucess!

Made a second attempt of Almagre and was successful this time as the snow was hard packed on the road. I shaved off a good mile or two by taking an old narrow road from just above Frosty Park. Great views and a very interesting mountain.

Route Climbed: the jeep trail 379A Date Climbed: September 10-2005  Sucess!

WARNING- There a rockslide on 379A one mile from the gate. Please park at the intersection of 379 and 379A until it is cleared. Turning around on the road with my Ford Ranger 4X4 was the scariest thing I've done in a long time. A larger vehicle would have major difficulty turning around. there is a cliff on both sides of the road. Once we did that the hike was great. We saw no one.

I am hoping to bike it next year.

Route Climbed: Forest Road 379 Date Climbed: October 10, 2004  Sucess!

Climbed to the summit with my son JP after a 4W drive of epic proportions up to Stratton Resevoir. The weather was perfect with spectacular views of Pikes, Cameron Cone, Cheyenne Canyon and Mt. Rosa. Could also see the Blanca Group, Crestone Group and much of the Sawatch.

Route Climbed: Cheyenne Canyon Date Climbed: July 4, 2004  Sucess!

Climbed up Cheyenne Canyon to Stratton Reservoir and then over to the summit. Great views on a nice, clear morning.

I first reached the summit of Almagre on June 12, when I biked up the road, and hiked from the reservoir. Also rode up to the radio towers on July 3.
