Anna's Hummingbird Feeding by Little Kern River

Anna\'s Hummingbird Feeding by Little Kern River
This female Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) fed on wild honeysuckle intermittently for 15 minutes as I ate lunch at the stock bridge across the Little Kern River.
Note the flower visible through the beating wings.

My thanks to lcarreau for identifying the species.

Man, their wings move so fast, like a bee! Gives them that quick dart-hovercraft quality.

Thank you. Yes, I've always enjoyed watching them, used to have a feeder outside my office. But this is the first time I've managed to get a photo of one out in the wild.

Hummingbirds are attracted to a wide variety of flowers.

Those blooms resemble wild honeysuckles.

From this angle, that's an "Anna's Hummingbird."

Perfect Larry! I checked my other photos and they seem consistant with others online. Thanks so much!
