April 16th, 2005 - Joe...

April 16th, 2005 - Joe staying well away from the edge of Cedar Ridge. It makes me sick seeing this image, since I know that our route took us over the very highest point of that cornice just minutes before the section that I was on collapsed, resulting in a 1,000 ft fall.

Re: beautiful shot

Thanks - I was amazed at how varied the cornices were on this climb - each one was a little different, and they ranged in form from the multi-headed leviathans to artsy abstract blocks hung in space. Creep in the snow gave some of the cornices 'elephant' trunks!

Is this where it happened?

Is the right side of the picture where the cornice broke? Also, congratulations on making it up the route safely this time!

Re: Is this where it happened?

Thankfully no! To the right is a 50-100 ft vertical cliff. The accident happened about 100 feet behind where this photo was taken. In fact, the fracture line initiated where this cliff ended!

Re: Is this where it happened?

Mark, I don't think that is correct. When you took this photo of me I had just taken this photo looking back up the ridge. The cornice broke in the crescent shaped area between where I took the photo and where Glenn is standing (you are just out of the photo on the right, about to take my photo). When the cornice cracked it started right between my feet, and I was just exiting off the corniced hump in the ridge which appears in your photo.

Re: Is this where it happened?

ahh, thanks for the correction. I knew this hump was right afterword, but I had forgotten that it was that close!
