Climbers from Vienna and Lower Austria started climbing on the rocks in Wienerwald (like Mizzi Langer Wand, around Mödling and Baden and on Peilstein).

Peilstein was an important training area (e.g. Fritz Kasparek did several climbs in winter on Peilstein before his first sucessful Eiger N-Face ascent) and is still one of the most important climbing areas near Vienna.

The routes on Peilstein are rated very hard (or underscored) - (Wenn du am Peilstein einen 5er gehst, gehst du überall einen 5er - You will climb any route graded 5 when you climb grade 5 routes on Peilstein)

Getting There

by train/bus: very difficult (regular train service to Weissenbach/Triesting; sometimes bus service to Maria Raisenmarkt)

by car from Vienna on the highway (Südautobahn - A2) change to Wiener Außenring Autobahn (A21) exit at Alland and continue on the road via Alland - Mayerling - Maria Raisenmarkt to
Schwarzensee (via Peilsteinhütte or Peilsteinhaus to the climbing routes)
Holzschlag - direct access to the climbing routes possible
