Overview

The Turtle Flat area is a small "ice cap" near the crest of the Central Chugach. Ice from this source flows mainly to the Matanuska Glacier, but the fringes flow variously to the Powell Glacier and the Harvard Glacier. Peaks around Turtle Flat hold incredible and mild glacier mountaineering.

Getting There

Get yourself out the Glenn Highway (between Palmer and Glenallen). The Alaska Transportation Group has shuttles available and reasonable rates. Fly with Mike Meekin from the Sheep Mountain area on the Glenn Highway. In real good weather Mike can land with one of his souped up planes right at Turtle flat. More reliably he can land in the upper Powell glacier area and the approach involves a few miles over a spectacular ramp/pass feature. Even more reliably, fly into the Alaska Mountaineering Club's Scandinavian Hut on the Matanuska Glacier, but the approach from there is more involved.

Red Tape

No permits required (5/2009)

Note that use of the Mountaineering Club of Alaska's Scandinavian Peaks Hut is restricted to non-commercial use by members of that club who, through their dues, pay for its maintenance and lease fees. Membership information for the MCA is available at www.mcak.org.

Camping

Glacier style. Get's wicked windy in the flats.
