Just a Few Words...

hello all,

i am not trying to get personal attention with this, or to boost my ratings or anything like that. i am just trying to get some word out on what i see as a small problem with some of the gear reviewing going on.

lately i have been looking up some stuff that i would like to post reviews on, only to find that the reviews in place are very, very sub-par and done sloppily. upon discovery of these poorly done reviews, i did some more digging only to find that many of the reviews on the site are not done very well. do not get me wrong: there are plenty of great reviews of gear that are very helpful to myself or anyone else looking for a good honest opinion or some product specifications. but, there are plenty of half-ass reviews that are no help at all and, in my humble opinion, should be removed from the site. these reviews help nobody.

in effect, what i am trying to say is this: if you want to review a piece of gear do it properly. put some time into it. make the page neat and orderly. put useful information about it on the page. do not just say "i have this pack and it is cool." reviews like that do not help anybody. i am just asking that people put some care into their pages so that other people can actually be helped by them. the gear review section was added so that people might be able to get useful information on products they might be interested in buying. please, try to give this useful information to them. thank you for your time.

This issue is worth taking seriously, and more people might respond if you post this in the forum. A problem is that people get Power Points for reviews no matter what the quality; some (many) just copy manufacturers' descriptions or from the back of a book.

Good point. When you're looking for a review of something worth a couple week's pay, you want some personal info, not a copy of what the website says about the product they market.

Gear Page vs Gear Review

Allow me to make a distinction between a Gear Page and a Gear Review, as they are not the same.

A Gear Page should contain a description from the manufacturer, IMO. The default categories when you click on Add Gear are "Product Description" and "Features". That information should be taken directly from the manufacturer's website, rather than have people attempt to describe the product from scratch and quite likely do a poor job of it.

The individual Gear Reviews by members are where people should add their own personal description of, experience with, and opinion of the product.

Both Gear Pages and Gear Reviews should be well written and detailed, or not at all.
