Patrouille des Glaciers overviewThe Patrouille des Glaciers is an exceptional race from Zermatt to Verbier or from Arolla to Verbier in one stage depending on the category. This unique race is characterized by its length, its high average altitude and the profile of its itinerary. Participating demands not only a real mountaineering experience and mastery of the extreme conditions encountered, but also a thorough physical and moral preparation (text from PDG).
The race is held in two variants: The big racetracks goes from Zermatt over Arolla to Verbier (53km), the smaller course from Arolla to Verbier (25km). The race is done on foot and on skis ( text from www.zermatt360.ch )

The competitor satisfies these minimal competence criteria :
regularly practice excursions and races on mountains
is a very good skier
knows how to ski roped
is very well trained
is capable in normal conditions of doing :
Zermatt-Schöbiel in 3 h 00*
Zermatt-Arolla in 7 h 30**
Arolla-Riedmatten in 1 h 45* *:maximal time
Arolla-Verbier in 8 h 30** **:average times
This race is run in civilian or military patrols of three competitors. It is open to male, female or mixed patrols.

Race regulations Race regulationsOverall best resultsThe Franco-Italian "Team Millet-Savoie-Mont Blanc" confirmed their role of favorite by beating the Swiss "Swiss Team 6" by more than 9 minutes. "Swiss Team 7" was a big favorite, second in 2004, but a competitor abandoned on the Col de Riedmatten. Despite capricious weather, the patrol composed of the Frenchmen Stéphane Brosse and Patrick Blanc, and the Italian Guido Giacomelli improved the 2004 record by 12 minutes and 54 seconds.

For Female patrols, the Swiss Catherine Mabillard, Séverine Pont and Gabrielle Magnenat, from the « Swiss Team 1 », also established a new record in 2006. 8h15’15’’, beating their previous record of 2004 by 8 minutes and 23 seconds.
