| the route had good traffic. on the way up, we watched two people slip and ride the express train all the way to the bottom of the gulch. | |

| Route: Avalanche Gulch Variation Left of Heart First mountaineering trip with a bunch of Boy Scouts and my brother. Left horse camp about 0300 and returned in 12 hrs. Ryan and friend summitted, then myself and brother. Others to follow. All but 3 summitted. Will have to come back when there is more snow. | |

| Don't take Shasta too lightly. At first light on a busy Sunday morning, I saw the first summitter of the day tumble about 500 feet after taking a false step right below Red Banks. He had to be helicoptered out from Helen Lake. | |
