Pleasant way to begin the calendar winter, a dusting of fresh snow to liven things up. With ZeeJay. Went on to Little Black Mountain and beyond.

Started at Perrys Hollow and climbed Twin Peaks first, then Little Black Mt, and then all the way to the high point of Black Mountain. It wasn't bad until after Little Black Mt at which point we had to choose between knee deep snow or lots of brush. 13 miles RT and over 5000' of elevation gain.

Went up on nice winter day. Took 3 wrong turns and ended up going direct up the west face. Managed to turn a routine hike into a sporty climb. Pretty views!

They had giant illuminated Olympic rings on the Avenues Twins during the 2002 Winter Games. I remember some people were concerned about possible environmental damage the rings may cause, but when I went up there in May 2002, I could see no damage at all.

I was going to wake up early to do a harder peak, but woke up late. I still wanted to get out, so I decided to do the Twins. Started from 650 E and 18th Avenue. Very easy hike. Offers great views of the mountains and of the city.

Have hiked there a few times from various starting points, and when I'm on a mountain-biking kick, I'll ride in the area almost weekly. Love the area and views. I live just down the hill from the Capitol, and have gotten stuck my head the aesthetic appeal of getting to a peak from my front door and back entirely by human power (no driving to a trailhead). So far this is the only peak I've done that for (it's 11 miles roundtrip, ~2000' vertical): spring 2009 by mountain bike (the easier method, obviously had to hike the last push), and now fall 2009 as a run (about 2 and a half hours roundtrip).

On our way to Little Black Mountain, Matthew Van Horn and I bagged both of these little bumps. The weather cleared briefly but returned with a vengence on Little Black.

4/20/11- With Matt Van Horn. Also tagged Van Hott.

5/12/11- With MattV and Jun32 before work starting at the capitol building. 9.7 miles. 1:36.
