View into Gunung Awu's massive crater with a one-year old lava dome at the bottom. I went down into the crater and circled the lava dome, but later lost the pictures.

Did you have a gas mask or anything? I would imagine there would be a variety of gasses collecting down there at the bottom.

This was on my first volcano trip in 2005, when I was just getting hooked (and didn't know a whole lot about what I was doing), so I didn't own a gas mask yet. There was the occasional smelly fumarole at the bottom, but otherwise the place was quite inactive at the time.
