Azusa Hwy 39 Bear 1
A bear spotted on June 27, 2009, after hiking Iron Mt. from Heaton Flats. The bear was alongside San Gabriel no. 1 reservoir on Highway 39. The bear was mature; a second picture shows gray fur.

A much better way to age a bear is ear size in comparison to the head. Fur color has nothing to do with age as black bears come in many colors. The bear in your photo has pretty large ears in comparison to his head, while definitely not a cub, I would say its still a pretty young bear. Great photo!

Thanks for the input. I assumed the gray streak visible in the second photo was based upon age. It was a pretty big bear, but it is hard to tell given the lack of anything for size reference. Interesting to think that a bear's ear might get smaller relative to size while the opposite is true for humans.
