Looking down upon the Floating Island Lava Flow. When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, it sent a devastating lahar or mudflow down the North Fork Toutle River, completely altering the river's course.

In this aerial view, the landscape is still steaming more than 1 year after the initial eruption. Photo taken on August 9, 1981. Scanned from 35mm photo.

Larry, thanks so much for posting your historic pix. There must be literally millions of photos of pre-eruption and early post-eruption St. Helens out there, and if we could capture even a tiny fraction of them here at SP, it could be almost like a museum. Keep 'em comin'! -Bob
