Wheeler-Bald combo  Sucess!

Since only half of the group felt like another peak, we didn't want to waste too much time and tagged on Bald Mountain on the way down from Wheeler Peak. There was a thunderstorm just north of Bald, so we took a few quick pics and quickly came down; it started sprinkling right as we reached the summit. The real rain only came when we were back at the trailhead.

Ignorance is bliss  Sucess!

After ignoring this peak for years, I realized it was on a "list". So I did the easy trifecta of Bald -Wheeler-Jeff Davis this year. The real goal was to restore karma on top of JD, in the form of a lost Nepalese Rupee (really, but the story is rather complicated).

The register is a mess -- a bunch of loose pages in a glass jar.

I must admit the views from the top are splendid.

From Wheeler Peak Trailhead  Sucess!

A side trip on the way back from Wheeler. I got so absorbed in following mule deer on the way up Bald Mtn that I forgot to do a self-portrait on the summit and never got a good picture of the deer, either. My slideshow is here: Wheeler Peak and Bald Mountain hike

Buzzzz  Sucess!

Perfect weather accompanied our trio to the summit. There is a nest of bees in the solar panel box at the summit. The bees are somewhat annoying, but non-aggressive.

Route Climbed: Along ridge between Bald Mt. and Wheeler Peak. Date Climbed: July 2005  Sucess!

This hike is almost exclusively over loose tallus of varying sizes all the way from the saddle to the summit. Good footing is a matter of finding a solid rock and using to to get to another. Hiking Pole(s) are a must on this hike - not so much for the slope, but for stability over the loose rocks.

In July of 2005 there were several patches of rather deep snow along the route to the summit. Once achieved, the view from the summit is spectacular. To the north you can see Mt. Moriah off in the distance. To the west, other north-south ranges of this portion of the Great Basin can be seen. Of course, to the south, Wheeler Peak predominates along with Jeff Davis Peak and a splendid view of Stella Lake.
