My first hike in Colorado after moving from NY. Great area and really nice views

Fern Canyon
Hiked up Fern Canyon starting at NCAR. It had snowed the two previous days, so parts of the trail were slick. I think that I fell down seven times on the way down. I almost fell several more times. Thank goodness for trekking poles!

Threw in South Boulder Peak as well too. Descended into Shadow Canyon then Mesa Trail to Chautauqua Ranger Station. Sweet loop!!

skipped out on bear the first time up south boulder so jamie and i decided to head over there. kinda surprised with the scrambly terrain at the top. highlight of the day!

Bear and S. Boulder
Fern Canyon trail, made it from the NCAR to Bear in about 1 hr 45 mins, continued on to S. Boulder, then came back to Bear to rest on the summit. Cool views and neat summit rocks. Storms started coming in, so started down after a half hour up there.

Saturday Hike
Started at North Shanahan around 8:30am, then took Fern Canyon to the summit. Went back along the West Ridge to Bear Canyon. Planned to also tag South Boulder but the midday heat changed our minds. The way up was fast and steep with a fun scramble to the final ridge, down was covered and gradual.

From Mesa Trailhead
Enjoyed the stiff climb up Shadow Canyon. Summitted Bear after South Boulder. I really enjoyed the little summit ridge scramble on surprisingly slick rock. Loved the narrow summit area, didn't love so darn many surprisingly unfriendly people on top. Hiking partner: shannarae2k. Dog: Stimpy.

Fern Canyon Route
A good bit of ice on the way up so we descended via Shadow Canyon and then Mesa back to NCAR. Beautiful Sunny Day and some great views. I wish we would have hit South Boulder Peak as well, I didn't realize how close it was...oh well, maybe next time.

This was the first of many climbs of Bear Peak. Several of the climbs were combined with South Boulder. A common route has been to take Shadow Canyon on the way up and descend via Fern Canyon. Bear & South Boulder have served as great conditioning hikes for staying in fourteener shape.

Flat Iron Triple Play
Started at the South Mesa Trailhead, hiked up the Shadow Canyon Trail and then summited South Boulder Peak, then backtracked and hiked up Bear Peak. From there headed down the West Ridge trail and hiked up Green Mountain. Finished the hike by hiking down to Chautauqua Meadows. About 9 miles with snow on the ground. Nice hike on a nice post Thanksgiving day.

What a view
Came up from Gregory canyon after hitting Green Mountain and came down the Fern Canyon trail.
Fun hike with some good steps along the way with a great view in all directions from the top.

Mesa Trail/Shadow Canyon
Hit this with a couple friends after coming off of South Boulder Peak. The scramble on top was fun and had the additional challenge of verglas.
