Re: Whoa...

This is the only photo I have of Perry and Jude together from that trip. It was the last photo in my camera before the lightning strike.

Chills

That photo sends chills up my spine...it looks safe enough... sure it was a flat area... but big mountain behind... and you werent on a ridge...count your blessings.

Re: Chills

The lightning strike happened a bit downstream from where this photo was taken. Our camp was up to the right, out of sight, and slightly behind where I was standing. If we ever do get back up there I wonder if I could find the exact spot?

Yes, we count our blessings.

Amazing story

I am amazed Jude survived - so very fortunate. Does she still climb. Great photos. Thank for educating everybody with your story.

Re: Amazing story

Thanks Liz.

Jude never was a climber, though she has hiked up Kala Pattar, Mount Elbert, and a few other things. She still loves mountain hiking, and actually has considered Kilimanjaro. I looked at your Kili summit log entry, thanks for that information. Who knows?!

Re: Amazing story

I highly recommend Kilimanjaro especially the Western Breach route. Isolated and incredibly beautiful. Kili is essentially a mountain hike which you will both be sure to enjoy. The folks at the Marangu Hotel can help sort the entire trip out for you. Feel free to contact me via email if you want more detailed information.

Personally planning on returning to Africa to do some more climbing there ... probably not till 2005 and might even do Kili again!

Namaste,

Liz

wow

My family and I will be hiking Pikes Peak next month, so I've been reading information on it and came across this post. Lightning is scary and definitely a great concern in Colorado, where we live.

I'm glad everything turned out well, but what an incredible story! Thank you for sharing your experience as it serves as awareness for the rest of us.
