Voted 10/10 | Tanya, I have a climbing question. When a person goes down the wall, that's rappeling.
How about when a person climbs UP the wall?
Is that called free-climbing? Regards to your awesome photos. Take care!

If a person goes back up the rope, it is called ascending or "jugging" the rope. If a person goes back up the wall using only the natural rock features to get up, and has a rope connected just to catch in the event of a fall, it is called free climbing. If the free-climber doesn't have a rope, then he is free-soloing. If a climber uses any sort of artificial gear like a bolt, climbing protective nuts, cams, or hooks, etc to aid in getting back up, then it is considered "aid climbing".

Voted 10/10 | And great beta. On the north side
of Arizona's Roosevelt Lake, there's a
landform called Dutch Woman Butte. At
the base of the butte, there's a slot
canyon called "The Jug." You just
mentioned the word "jugging." I wonder
if there's a connection there! Cheers.

Voted 10/10 | Ha, ha! You're having enough work with
getting the NAMES of those peaks and
buttes straigtened out in east Zion, right?
Sorry I can't help you there. I just point
to them with my mouth open, and nothing
comes out. : > ) | | Posted Dec 9, 2007 2:05 pm |
