| Penelope May and I visited the Highlands in late January 2010 and climbed this wonderful peak via the East Ridge, more or less by route number 1 on the Ben Lui page of Via Glen Cononish route drawing (Scottish Grade I in winter). We had a good hard snow and some ice on the ridge and loved weaving in and out of the many small towers higher up. We did not use rope. Missed the easiest descent as we lost the view completely in a tremendous white-out on the summit. The route up was pretty straight forward, Pen used two ice tools, I only had an ice axe (wished for both tools) and the climbing was really good. Excellent route on a magnificent peak,we loved the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere just a few miles from the town of Tyndrum. |
