Misty  Sucess!

Marie and I ascended this mostly in mist. It cleared a little at the summit offering tantalising views southwards!
Back in the mist, we traversed over to Cairngorm.

34 years ago!  Sucess!

Date approximate. This was for a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expedition when I was 17 years of age. We made the ascent and then traversed the Laraig Gru - in perfect weather. I have always wanted to go back there.

Rainy Day  Sucess!

Camped on the ridge due to heavy rain and summited early in the morning in thick fog. A beautiful hike hike back to the car in the late afternoon though.

November 2008  Sucess!

We went there in November 2008. Very strong wind, poor visibility + snow. Navigated mainly using the map and the compass. We started walking from the Rangers / Ski Centre and went through the summit to the Loch Avon and then back. We met some guys from Belgium next to the Loch that day...

Clear day  Sucess!

Hiked to Macdui as part of a trekking trip in the Cairngorms.

Most of the day, visibility was excellent. I got up to the plateau from the Lairig Ghru by way of the Chalamain Gap, then hiked straight to Macdui. Couldn't see any path, because the plateau was still covered in snow.

A kid's introduction to mountain hiking  Sucess!

Got a call from a friend of mine, who got utterly tired of her 17-year old son sitting in front of the PC for the whole summer vacation and literally begging me to take her son on a trip somewhere. I figured the Cairngorms would've been a much better introduction to Scotland than the Nevis Range for someone who's never seen mountains before, and I decided to go up to Cairn Gorm; if it all turned to be too much, we could still take the funicular down and call it a day. Fortunately, I had underestimated his stamina and me managed to take in MacDui as well, unfortunately not before my sweet girlfriend decided to run down scree on her flipflops and took a pretty nasty fall, resulting in the removal of a little piece of Ben Macdui from underneath her knee cap a month later in Poland...

Supersize Me  Sucess!

Enjoyed a long day doing Ben Macdui including a flirt with the remaining snow. A good test of zero vis navigation too, it works!

Route: Glenmore - Creag an Leth-choin - Ben Macdui  Sucess!

A very long day - good route though - looking down the length of the Lairig Ghru - bit cloudy, old snow still on the top..!

From Linn of Dee  Sucess!

The route started at Linn of Dee and goes via Carn Crom and Derry Cairngorm to Ben MacDui. The descend goes to Carn a'Mhaim and then back to Linn of Dee. A fine day: about 30 km and 13 hours.

Not to forget that since that day I know how deep and cold scottish rivers are. Past Carn a'Mhaim we stayed to the right of the Luibeg Burn cause we didn't find a good passage. That went fine until we came to a large fence crossing the way and the river. Going back? Never!! My girlfriend climbed Indiana-Jones-alike along the fence and I pulled out my shoes and went through the river. I can tell you, it was REALLY cold ...
On the other side my trousers were wet because of the strong current. So I walked the last 10 kilometers or so wearing the woolen panty hose of my girlfriend. Thank God it wasn't pink ...

A couple of times  Sucess!

Climbed it twice, once with my Dad on a lovely September day in 1996 from Braemar and also in October 2004 alone on a great day but with quite a lot of snow then descended to the Lairig Grruh and camped in a blizzard. No sign of the big grey man either time!
