twice so far  Sucess!

Once by Tower Ridge, once by Coire Leis. The first time we had the mountain to ourselves, the second time, the top was like Tesco car park.

Ben Nevis in the rain.  Sucess!

In November 1960 as a final gesture before leaving the UK for good, I hitchhiked northward from Oxford. After a tramp in the English Lake District, I found myself at Fort William beyond Glasgow. While my memory of this uphill hike has faded, I remember following a trail in dense fog to Nevis's summit still enveloped in clouds. Lack of any view disappointed me but I felt some satisfaction of having reached the highest point in the British Isles.
I subsequently hitchhiked along Loch Ness to Inverness and on around Scotland to Edinburgh. There on a rainy Sunday morning before the castle, I met a madcap American heiress and had a smashing time riding in her rented Ford around Edinburgh looking for a bar to have a drink, then hurried south to England to find an open pub while carrying a lump of coal to Newcastle. At around midnight, we found the country hotel along Hadrian's Wall. Far more exciting than mountain climbing. Whoopie!

Many times

over the years, mainly on winter climbing routes. This hill still scares me though. It has some of the worst weather you will encounter anywhere! I've only ever seen cloud from the top.

Couldn't see a thing, occasional glimpses of the north face were stunning. Summit deserted. Amazing experience. No end of fun on this peak.

Done this with my workmates for charity. Set off at 3:30 in the morning when it was fairly quiet. Well worth it, even though i'm still cursing those zigzags. Great day.

Tourist Route  Sucess!

Rubbish weather- long, wet slog to the summit with no views to make it all seem worthwhile. Still, its the largest peak in the UK so i guess that was the trophy :)

Ledge Route  Sucess!

Climbed up Ledge Route, condition of the ice was poor but a fine mountain route all the same.No technical difficulties, and was rewarded with very fine views of Loch Lhinne and Aonach Mhor.A 10 half hour day took its toll, but the party up a mountain the night after made up for the pain!!

Less than thrilling path that we chose and more of a slog upwards, look forward to doing this peak on a route worthy of its reputation.

What a day! Hot weather made it quite a toughie, but it was well worth it,as you can see from the pic. I think we were extremely lucky to get a day as clear as this, especially with it being our 1st time. I know people who have been up 5+ times and never had a clear day!

Route Climbed: Allt Choire Giubhsachan, Cairn Mor Dearg Date Climbed: 20th August 2005  Sucess!

Started out in mist at 9am from Water of Nevis car park. Mist soon burnt off, and sun shone brightly for the rest of the day. Spectacular weather, one of those rare clear warm days on Ben Nevis. We were happy to find there is a faint track up along the river of Allt Choire Giubhsachan. It fades out on the marshy flats, but re-emerges on the steep sections. Made it to the Col between Carn Mor Dearg and Aonachs at 12:30pm, took our time with lots of long rests in the warm sunshine. there is also a faint track up the Watershead to Cairn Mor Dearg. Took us two hours, and then two hours to Ben Nevis! Totally clear views from summit. It is a great route with spectacular views all the way, and even though it was August we were completely on our own until Cairn Mor Dearg.
