New Year's Eve Summit  Sucess!

Hiked from Dry Canyon to the saddle. Summited at sunset and hiked down to the flagpole peak and down the SW ridge. Beautiful Afternoon. 3 hours up 1 hour down. Dry as Dry can be. Felt like hiking in September other than the 30 degree weather. Was a little hard packed snow up on the summit.

Great after work climb  Sucess!

I like to do this climb after work. It's probably the best hike ever...only takes a few hours.

good winter climb  Sucess!

I like to climb Big Baldy during the winter months. It is a good snow shoeing trip via dry canyon.

Many Runs Up  Sucess!

I've been up here a dozen or so times, the first of which was my Dad's birthday when I was eight (Aug. 17th, 1990). In 2006, Danny Moody and I went up with only 24 oz of water each from The Stairway---rock pile---Little Baldy Saddle route and back---needless to say we got heat illness and were in pretty bad shape. Fun stuff! Went straight up the Southwest face with my Sis Amber in 2004---DUMB, lots of being on all fours. Also went up while training for the Alpine to Slickrock 50 Miler in 2008 and went up the Ridge trail that breaks straight off in Dry Canyon---direct, steep, and quick---came down the saddle, little baldy, rockpile stairway---one of my favorite trails ever.

Steep!  Sucess!

Went up Dry Canyon, and summitted via the Southwest ridge. It was eerily similar to Jacob's Ladder on the Lone Peak hike. So very steep. The top was amazing though. Had the peak all to ourselves (Me, my neighbor Dave, and his dog). Descended via the east ridge and Dry Canyon. Would definitely recommend adding 2 miles roundtrip to your trip up Big Baldy to take that way up and down.

Re: Steep!

Kent,

My friends and I did this hike in the snow yesterday. Hit up to six feet of snow and couldn't get from the saddle to the summit because we didn't really think we would need snowshoes. Are you doing any climbs this summer? We are going to do the Provo Traverse once the snow is gone up there. Good to see you on summitpost.org.

Spring hike  Sucess!

I hiked this with my friend Doug in early 2009. It's a good hike to take while you're waiting for snow at higher elevations to melt.

Done twice via...  Sucess!

I've done this guy twice. The first was via Battle Creek in summer. The second was via the south ridge in winter. We started in Dry Canyon, followed a couple trails that branched off to the left, and eventually got on top of the ridge. It was a ton of fun!

A nice hike  Sucess!

What a beautiful fall day. This was my first hike since jacking up my knee running a marathon a month earlier. I was a little slower than normal, but we did make decent time going up. It was cold on top and we had some excellent views of Timp and the Fall colors. My knee was a bit tight on the way down, but not much pain. Perfect way to start the day. I think I will add this into my regular training routine.

via Dry Canyon  Sucess!

I hiked this with a friend via Dry Canyon trail. It was picturesque to enter the canyon with the sheer cliffs on either side about 15 minutes into the hike. The hike was a gentle incline, which made for a nice hike. From the trail, Big Baldy didn't look that far away, nor not that steep. We contemplated just bushwhacking up the SW slope, but decided to just stick with the trail. We made good time, and only saw two people on the way up. Due to there still being patches of snow on the east side, we lost the trail and did some creative trail blazing the eventually led us back to the trail about a quarter of a mile from the summit. Had the peak to ourselves the whole time. Great views of Timp, including some neat waterfalls on the lower Timp face caused by the spring snow melt. I've been told that the Battle Creek route is a little more scenic, probably due to Battle Creek Falls and the subsequent water. However it was a great opportunity to hike Big Baldy up Dry Canyon. I'd never seen it so green! We hiked back down via Dry Canyon which was a nice four hour hike.

GPS put the summit at 3.5 miles from the parking lot (via Dry Cyn)  Sucess!

Wandered up there and back for a little outing to get better views of Timp. 2:25 up and 1:30 down. I recommend trekking poles for on the way down to save the knees. Kudos to Josh Blackwelder for summitting!!!

via Dry Canyon  Sucess!

Baldy is a great workout offering stunning views of Mt. Timpanogos and Utah Valley. Round trip took a little over 3 hours.

Battle Creek  Sucess!

Needed a good conditioner and this fit the bill perfectly. Its 10 miles RT from the Battle Creek TH and I found the trail nice and enjoyable. Met a group of 5 who were doing a loop, a couple were boy scouts getting their 10 mile hike in.

Have also done it via the SW ridge.

Battle Creek Canyon in the rain  Sucess!

Great hike up Battle Creek Canyon, passing lots of waterfalls and cool rock formations. We took a wrong turn and got off the trail for a while going up, but after bushwhacking for a bit we found that we had taken a pretty significant shortcut through the forest. Making our way through clouds and fog, we eventually found ourselves at the top of Big Baldy. The clouds parted just after we reached the summit, and we enjoyed some fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and Utah Valley. Great spot for route-finding on Timpanogos! A moderate half-day adventure.

Yup  Sucess!

Hiked up from Dry Creek. The bottom stretch of Dry Creek is pretty dry and boring, but once you start getting higher towards the Baldy/Timp saddle it's nicer.

Took probably two hours up, one hour down.

Met a nice guy on the top who had hiked from Grove Creek, IIRC.

Fun hike.

Evening Run  Sucess!

July 3, 2023 solo from Battle Creek.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
April 19, 2018 With Richard and Fred from work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Aug 5, 2008 I felt like getting out for some exercise so I did a quick trail run up Big Baldy. I reached the south peak in one hour and twenty minutes, and over to the east ridge (north peak) in another 10 minutes. I made a traverse out of it by ascending the south ridge, and descending the east ridge.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Memorial Day 2008 (May 26, 2008)
Walked/Scrambled up the South ridge during rain showers. A lot of parts I moved up two steeps and slide back one, but round trip took less than 3 hours (2 up, 1 down). The last 100 vertical feet was covered in fresh snow, and I got caught in a grauple storm on the descent. From the peak, one can see into Provo Canyon to the south, and happy valley (suburbs) to the west. I was on the south summit (the one with the flag pole).
Multiple times between 1996 and 2007
Great hike with stellar views of Timpanogos from the summit. I like the Battle Creek trail better than Dry Canyon, but they make a great loop if hiked together (ascent, descent).
