We were going to hike to Sperry Chalet in GNP, but it was raining too hard in the park, so we sought higher elevation where it might be snowing and decided on Big Mountain. Had snowshoes strapped to our packs the whole way up, but never used them in the well-packed snow. The summit lodge was so packed, there wasn't a table available.
Stayed at the Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. Borrowed bikes from the hotel and rode to the base of the ski resort. Hiked to the top, passed a bit of a snowfield. Really nice, fairly easy hike. Saw some crazy downhill mountain bikers! Took probably 4-5 hours to get to the top including the bike ride and then we took the gondola down and rode our bikes down. Took less than 20 minutes! What a great day! Loved my first trip to MT! :)
PS the gondola isn't free anymore, it's $5 one way
Summitted this mountain as a back-up after being weathered out of a Logan Pass climb. The summit was populated with assorted winos, ski bums and mountain bikers. If you're looking for solitude...this one isn't for you. My most un-favorite summit to date. Climbed with Cougar14, Kitty, & Tater. Escaped as quickly as possible back down the mountain on the free chair lift.
