solitude, thunder, and hail  Sucess!

Took four hours and forty minutes from the Ute Creek TH, with a bit of futzing around trying to find the best way up (which was to the right via the southeast) and also some minor postholing. I only stayed on top thirty seconds as a storm was moving in and the thunder and hail started after only a couple of minutes of descent. A mountain lion was on the prowl on the slopes. I only know because its footprints overlapped mine in a couple of places.

Bison Peak  Sucess!

January 2

Kessler and I started late morning at the Ute Creek Trailhead and headed up towards Bison Saddle. Bison Peak had been on our list for a long time. We made pretty good time, having a chat with Mark, a fellow climber along the way. We set up camp and set off for Bison Peak. It was very cold and windy once we were above timberline.

We made our way up the right side of the ridge towards Bison Peak, making the summit not long before sunset. It was a nice summit with cool rock formations. We spent some time on top (it was cold!) before heading back down and reaching camp after dark.

After eating dinner and walking around we headed for bed.

January 3

It was a very windy night. I don't know how cold it got as the thermometer died, but it was 7F/-14C not long after we went to bed so it probably got a bit colder than that.

In the morning we took a quick trip up towards Bison View (peak) for the view before packing up camp and heading back down the mountain.

Avoiding Fire to the North, Great Backup Choice  Sucess!

Started from Ute Creek TH around 7:50 am. A sunny but breezy day. With five fires burning to the north, we decided to head south and tackle Bison Peak. Well-maintained and easy trail to the summit. The rock formations up top are amazing. The views toward the Sangres, Sawatch, Mosquitos, and rest of the Front Range are fantastic on a clear day. We were finished by 12:40 pm. The Lost Creek Wilderness is a gem!

Ute Trail  Sucess!

Climbed with Scot. Not much snow, the storms from the week before largely missed this area. A surprisingly pleasant weather day - sunny and calm despite the cold. Very cool rock formations, would be worth another visit some day to scramble around on.

Ute Creek/Brookside McCurdy  Sucess!

CMC hike, there were 10 of us. We started around 8:30AM and got back around 4:45. It was supposed to snow, but it started out mostly sunny. There was patchy snow and ice on the lower sections, and deeper snow from Bison Pass to the summit plateau. Snowshoes would have helped on this section, especially on the return. It took almost exactly 5 hours to reach the summit. It did start snowing and the wind picked up while we were near the summit, but it let up once we got below treeline. Dig those nifty granite monoliths up there!

Perfect Spring Summit Hike  Sucess!

A little breezy in the parking lot and near the top, but a picture-perfect day to head up Bison Peak. Climbing up through the rocks and through some slots to the top was fun and more challenging than heading around the side to reach the summit, though not necessarily recommended for the way back.

Nice winter overnighter  Sucess!

Camped along the trail on the east side of Bison Arm (on the way to McCurdy) and enjoyed a nice summit of Bison the next morning. Still one of my favorite areas in CO.

Clear to Summit  Sucess!

Decided to hike this peak for the first time and it was a really cool experience. The views are excellent and the summit is very unusual due to the strange rock formations. GPS said it was about 4200 feet of elevation gain and 12 miles round trip.
