Black Butte Trail  Sucess!

Climbed this one with my wife. Looks much more imposing from Interstate 5. Very nice trail to the top. I recommend an early or late start on this one to avoid the hot direct sun though. Great views of Mount Shasta and the valley.

Black Butte  Sucess!

Climbed it sometime in May 2005.
Broke in my new mountaineering boots on this big bump. Great little hike.

Done on a trip driving back from concord a real quik hike less than 2 hours. Great views of shasta even with the clouds mostly blocking it.

Route Climbed: Black Butte Trail Date Climbed: 28 July 2005  Sucess!

Started early because of the 100+ degree weather in nearby Redding where I was staying, but enjoyed the coolness of the higher air. At times during the hike I felt like I was on Mars due to the rocky environment, but the views of Shasta were great. I had been waiting to hike this "little hill" for some time and felt great to reach the top (and see the smiley face!) I want to thank this website for the directions to the trailhead.

Route Climbed: Black Butte Trail Date Climbed: April 4th, 2004  Sucess!

Started around 9 am. The trail was nice, hitting a few snow patches here and there. When we made the eastward turn up the small valley things got difficult. I encountered some serious ice fields with long run-outs. It made me wish I had my ice axe and a helmet with me because a fall would have sent me down about 500 ft. and into some rather nasty rocks. I'd rate this as on the verge of Class 3 (there was some scrabling that needed some hands). Summited with a "smile" and scurried down nervously over the ice.

A quick climb up one morning on my way to Oregon. There was a lot of snow at this time, but I didn't take an ice axe because it was just a quick hike. However, there were a few traverses where I wish I would have had an axe in hand. :>)

Route Climbed: Summit Trail Date Climbed: June 12th 2003  Sucess!

I took my 5 year old son with me. It took us about 3 hours to reach the summit. There was no snow and it was a beautiful day. Except for the climb down. It started to rain and hail on us. We had lunch with the Happy Face.

Hiked up in the afternoon with Rachel. Got to the summit around when the sun set. It was warm while we hiked up, but cold and really windy at the summit. It was nice anyway. Had a great view of the W-face of Shastina/Mt. Shasta, which glowed orange in the fading light, the snow long gone. By the time we got down it was pitch black, but lying on the ground and looking up, we could see the stars very clearly. Great day.
