February, 2003 - Road to the trailhead was snow covered but driveable. I brought snowshoes, but did not need them due to an established boot path. mediocre views due to clouds.

June, 2004 - Decided to do this again on my back from central Oregon. Had great views from Bachelor to Adams, and saw a nice sunset. I saw about 10 other people in the 2 hours I was there. very dusty trail.

CornvallisRoute Climbed: South side from HWY 20 Date Climbed: April 6, 2004  Sucess!

Cornvallis

Decided to bush-whack my way up the south side from HWY 20. Probably my worst idea ever. Parked at Black butte Ranch, crossed the highway, and headed up. It has always looked so easy, I was wrong. Thick manzinita, deep pine needles, and steep slopes. Almost gave up about 600 feet from the top due to thick brush, but kept pushing on some how hoping I would meet up with the trail any minute. Finally connected with the trail and it was smooth sailing the rest of the way up. Plenty of snow up top. Amazing views from the summit area, one of the best in Central Oregon. Fought my way back down through the brush, slipping and sliding all the way in the deep pine needles. Got back to the car filthy, tired, and scratched up. Never thought Black Butte could be such a tough climb! :-) That route should never be taken again, or even mentioned!

On a hot day for hiking, I made the crowded trek up Black Butte. I got a good look at the circa-1930s fire lookout tower before it collapsed the following winter. Great views of the Cascades from Broken Top to Mt. Adams.

During a scenic drive done in place of climbing @ Smith Rock (breaking my hand the previous day abruptly cancelled the rock-climbing planned for the remainder of my long weekend), the idea came up to hike up this butte, both to get the blood pumping, and to enjoy what appeared would be some outstanding views of the central Oregon Cascades. After enquiring directions of some dude on his horse, we were soon at the trailhead. Starting @ 15.55, we summited @ 16.57. On the snow-covered top, we climbed up as high as we could on the watchtower, enjoying some spectacular views. Departing @ 17.20, we got back @ 18.30. There were some awesome views along the way, and the weather was great, too. The day turned out to be the best substitute to climbing for which I could have hoped (the biggest complaint was "Turbo" the lighter's inability to function correctly @ altitude on the descent)!

Climb through the fog to Breathtaking views of surrounding mountains. Patches of ice on Trail at lower elevations, snow covered trail near top. For this time of year couldn't ask for better Climbing conditions.
