Great Peak!  Sucess!

Agree with everything aobbard said in his entry. The road is drivable all the way to the end now with a decent vehicle. Black Crook is a fantastic scramble via the SE ridge.

Shwacky down low, scrambly up top  Sucess!

Via Southeast ridge. Great hike, perfect conditions & weather. 2 updates I'll share:

1- Earlier reports talked about how bad the final stretch of road road was. It is now in pretty good shape. Maybe not quite passenger-car, but definitely subaru-able.

2- When descending, the easiest way is via the drainage to the South of the track shown on Eric Willhite's page. Basically follow the ridge to the South to the smooth low-point/saddle, then turn left/East and drop straight down. This way it's only 700 ft vertical to the road, and the first 400 is on open gravel/small-scree that you can pretty much jog down. The bottom 300 is super-shwacky, but sticking to the dry drainage in the center provides a clear path down. (I don't know that I'd recommend this drainage *up*. Compared to Willhite's drainage the bushwack at the bottom is worse, and ascending the gravel upper slop would be 1 step forward, 1/2 step back type of thing...)

Black Crook Peak  Sucess!

We went up the Southeast Ridge to the summit. There was a lot of new snow and the it was very slow going. We would try to stay to the rocks as much as we could but a good portion of the time we were up to our waists in snow. On the way down we dropped down into the canyon to the south of the false summit and were able to glissade a lot of it back to the road. It took us over 4 hours to get up and less than 2 to get back down.

North Pine Canyon  Sucess!

With care, I was able to drive to the start of forest road 601 where I parked. Harker Road is in good condition, but forest road 559 was a stretch for my Subaru, and 601 was out of the question. Walked to the end of the road and then bushwhacked to the ridge that is north of the end of the road. Didn't much like what I saw so I came back down and bushwhacked along the side aways and then headed back up. The scrambling on the ridge is tough because of all the pesky trees in the way. I also went to peak 9267.

North Pine Canyon  Sucess!

I had studied the map and thought I saw a good route on the ridge that is north of the road in North Pine Canyon. So, today I went for it. It was all cross country and not quite the walk in the park i hoped for. However, the end result was good. I found the Bennion benchmark is a most unexpected place. Very unusual placement and this would be easy to miss if you didn't get the highest point. I found no register although I might have simply missed looking in the right spot.

Route Climbed: Southeast Ridge Date Climbed: May 13, 2006  Sucess!

There was still quite a bit of snow left in the Sheeprock Mountains from all of the late spring storms. This is a nice peak that isn't climbed much. I had to go over two false summits before I got to the actual summit. The scrambling along the ridge was fun. Good view from the top.
