South Summit  Sucess!

Yeah, I'm calling them Black Lion North & South. Sorry for the confusion but that's just what it looks like on a map to me. Sooo, many years later I had a chance to come back and climb the south summit, as previously planned. From camp at Lake Abundance, up the south ridge, over the summit and down to the saddle, then dropped down to Grace Lake for a swim and on down to the trail. We had a good time for sure, but it was rocky. The Pioneer Mountains are very cool.

With West Black Lion  Sucess!

Hiked up the east ridge from the Canyon Creek trailhead and went over to West Black Lion as well. Pleasant hike.

NE ridge/face from Cannivan Gulch  Sucess!

North summit. Came in from the Vipond Park area - first time there and it is beautiful! While I was climbing the upper slopes I saw someone come up into the basin on a motorcycle and begin the climb up on foot. I decided to wait at the top until the mysterious stranger arrived instead of heading over to the south summit. It turned out that it was Karl - a very nice man (age 70!) who told me all about the lifetime of adventures he has accumulated in the Big Hole area - including a snowmobiling trip to the top of Black Lion a few years back that almost killed him! We talked for a long time up there and on the way back down to his bike before we parted ways. What an unexpected encounter! Thanks for all the stories Karl! Oh - it's a gorgeous mountain - I'll be back some day!

Standard Rt.  Sucess!

Climbed on from the Buffalo Head Gulch road for the second time. Found some nice crystals and some turquoise copper ore on the mountain.
