Oklahoma!
Drove down from Boulder after stopping at Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site and Bent's Old Fort NHS. Stayed the night in La Junta then drove down to Kenton. The tri-state point was fun. Beautiful day with 60 degree weather for a hike. Got to the highpoint before a thunderstorm came rolling in. Clear views to the Sangre de Cristos, Wheeler Peak, Capulin Volcano, and Rabbit Ear Mountain. We stayed at the Black Mesa B&B. 5/5. Vicki and Monty Joe are AMAZING hosts.
Climbed it twice actually. First time was August of 2016 and the 3rd was in October of 2017. It's a beautiful and rugged country side.

Another one of my favorite HPs. Highly recommend staying at the Black Mesa B&B either before or after.
Hike has a prehistoric feel to it, and the summit is full of black volcanic rocks, hence 'black mesa'.

Unique location and sublimely remote
My sister and I drove up from Albuquerque and got to Kenton around 2pm. We hiked to the summit and back in about three hours and met an aviation inspector from Tulsa named John at the summit and enjoyed his company on the way down. We also enjoyed the varied terrain and wildlife, including "horned toads" and cool looking collared lizards. Mostly flat except for about ten minutes near the summit. Solid hike overall.

Lovely morning
After wild thunderstorms on the way up from Austin (crazy hail in Brownwood!) and relentless wind that evening at Black Mesa SP, got up early and made it to TH just after sunrise. No one in the lot, no one on the trail. Trail is very easy to follow. Monument at high point is quite pretty.

Very remote area, not much to see along the drive there...The hike was actually weirdly unique...Make sure you have gas and food before going there and watch for snakes! Found the only restaurant nearby at the HootOwl Steakhouse (877)226-5791, not sure if it's still open but it was good

Black Mesa #14
Made it to the summit 2 minutes before sunset. Grabbed a great summit sunset.
About 70 degrees and breezy when I did it. Nice views of mesas for the first 3 miles or so. Then the views get pretty dull once you get to the actual mesa top. Benches are present at mile markers 1,2, and 3 and there are some directional signs to keep you on track. I was on a tight schedule so made it car to car in a little over 2 hours. 3-4 hours would be a nice relaxed pace.

I hiked this trail during the day to accomplish my 2nd highpoint; my dad passed away in the evening. Dad, that hike was for you and for raising me to be a strong, independent person I am today. RIP

Multi Peak Trip
Along with: OK State Line Point, 4750, Sunflower, Kansas State Line Point, Rock Hill & Grant Cty HP.
Drove from Grantsville UT, all night on Wed the 5th to Mt. Elbert in CO. Got in at 2am and was up at 6:30 am. Summited Elbert that morning and drove all the way to trailhead of Wheeler, NM that same day. Was up at sunrise and was the 2nd person on top of Wheeler for the day.Drove all the way to Black Mesa in OK that afternoon. Summited Black Mesa the next morning (Saturday the 8th). i hiked with a really cool guy named Greg from the Seattle area who was trying to do every single lower 48 high point in one road trip. He was pretty close to the end and only had a few left in the west. I drove all the way to Mt. Magaizine in AR that same day. I slept in the back of my van in the parking lot of the Lodge. Didn't want to drive around in the campsite so late at night. Trail ran to the summit very early Sunday morning. Left immediately and drove to St. Louis to start a grad school program that night. Back to Back to Back to Back state high points. Was a good road trip.

This was my first state highpoint. I stayed the previous night at Black Mesa Bed and Breakfast in Kenton, which is run by two very lovely and kind people, it's reasonably priced, and they have cute dogs and cats. Also, the night sky in this area is literally amazing since there is very little light pollution and you can see a mind-boggling number of stars in the sky. Anyway, I started my hike at around 9AM, and it took roughly 5 hours roundtrip, which included an hour of me taking pics and eating lunch at the top. Not only was this my first state highpoint, but it was the first hike I had ever done by myself. As it turns out, I really was by myself in all senses of the term, as I never ran into another person or saw another car besides mine the entire time I was there; I only saw cows and birds. It was quite an amazing feeling of accomplishment. The hike itself was pretty middle-of-the-road in my opinion, not difficult because a significant portion of the beginning and the end of the trail are just flatland walking, but not easy because some sections in the middle of the trail are fairly steep and rocky. After visiting the highpoint marker, I walked over to the edge of the mesa so I could look down the cliff onto New Mexico, which was a beautiful sight but it was quite windy, enough to cause me to take a couple of steps back from the edge for safety's sake. There was no snow, only earth, plants, and sky for as far as my eyes could see. Based on other people's experiences hiking this in the summer, I am glad I did this one in the winter. I was dressed in layers and I took them off and put them back on as needed, never getting unbearably hot or cold. This place is a long drive from most anywhere, but it's a harshly beautiful landscape and I am glad I hiked it.
This was our 21st Highpoint and the firs for 2016 and the first since my Achilles surgery so this would be a good test. Had great weather and a nice hike to the top of Oklahoma.

After visiting the other Plains high points, I wasn't expecting such a long hike from Oklahoma, but every step of that 8-mile round trip was beautiful. Hiked up to the high point, then detoured to the edge of the mesa and watched the vultures and ravens ride the updrafts. Don't we all wish we could do the same?
