| Left parking lot at PC camground at 7am. Made it to lake by 9:35. NW summit via lake and up boulders. That is a longer way, go up west side of spur to NW ridge. It's a steap headwall at the end but it's good footing. 10hrs 45min car to car. 9:26 hike time. A long day, a rewarding climb! | ||

| Made the summit on the first day of a four day trip. Unfortunately I stashed my stove in some rocks to prevent critters from running off with it. It was within view of our campsite. Some lady took our stoves while we were up on the peak. She thought it was 'forgotten' in the wilderness and 'took it' to give it back to the rightful owner. She did leave a note at the trailhead and I did get it back but it promptly ended our four day trip... | ||

| Still lots of snow this year, sunny sky and good conditions. Not a soul past the falls. A couple small wet slides on the descent. | ||

| My intention was to summit Black and then continue along the ridges and saddles to McKnight Peak to the North. I summited Black Mountain at approxmately 8:30 a.m in beautiful conditions. The views were muted however due to the fires near Red Lodge. I started off along the ridge to McKnight was quickly shut down from insurmountable climbing challenges and my own personal fear. I proceeded to retreat down the peak and walk across the Pine Creek Basin and up to the McKnight Saddle for views into McKnight Lake and beyond. Well worth the trip. | ||

| Wow....what a cool hike/climb. The scenery in that area is second to none. It was very cool to see Pilot and Index and the view of Cowen is sweet. Highly recommended. | ||

| broke trail entire way, post holing! opted to do the west ridge from the upper lake, instead of soloing the couloir route. This was due to my exhuastion causing a sudden lack of confidence. | ||

| This is an impressive summit that towers above one of the most beautiful and remote-feeling scenes I have ever seen. We left from the campground later than planned, but past the crowds well before the tree-line. After leaving most of our pack weight at Jewel lake with a less-inclined member of our party, the other 3 of us headed up the west ridge and made it back down with enough time to eat a short lunch and rest before the upper lake area began to fill with the irritating crowds... | ||

| Went up with bthere and friends, swam up the left Y gully and stood on top late in the day. I got the "up close and personal" view of bthere's slide, left me puckered. The schwack out through the unknown was the worst part, though, especially since I left my headlamp at home... | ||

| Climbed the left branch of the Y gully, then scrambled to the summit. One skier dropped in to a safe spot, then I kicked off an 18" avalanche that roared past him. We hiked back out and descended the south side of the mountain, mostly in the dark and through dense forest. Very long day, very poor conditions on the descent, but still better than being buried! 19 hours car to car. | ||

| Beautiful hike in, and a great ridge walk to the summit. Perfectly clear day. Sat down with a couple of topos at my side, spent a while naming visible peaks. Highly recommend this climb. Do-able in one day, but why hurry? Spend your weekend up there. It is worth it. | ||

| Nice scramble, terrible wind and visibility. We were on our hands and knees at times when the wind was trying to blow us off the ridge. A great peak to climb for beginners wanting to gain some experience with exposure and route finding. | ||

| joel2lounge | Route Climbed: West to East Ridge traverse Date Climbed: July 24, 2004 ![]() | |
| Hit trailhead solo at 6am, cut out to west ridge from Jewel Lake and summited at 9:30. Then descended east ridge summit block and traversed ridgeline to saddle east of pine creek lake and then dropped down to tbe lake at noon. After the ridgeline turns north after going east it becomes rather technical and somewhat loose depending on your route. Ridge is actually quite solid but if you drop off either east or west it can become quite loose. Back at the car by 2pm. After mid-july this route can easily be done in running shoes and a some water/food, no axe needed. GO LIGHT. | ||
